While my emotional state has been erratic lately there is a steadiness in our daily runs. People talk of the chemical balance and self esteem we gain from exercise, but for me even the simple metronome of left-right, left-right immediately soothes anxiety and resets some wiring. It’s a form of bilateral stimulation, a therapy technique traditionally used to combat PTSD, but engaging the left-right brain even in activities we are naturally drawn to, like running, can help us process thoughts and emotions more effectively.
